Inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, and David Bowie, newcomer Jared Weiss bares his soul on Isolated Thunderstorms. The New York City based rock/folk rock singer-songwriter keeps up with the tradition of storytelling musicians and holds nothing back on his debut. Weiss’ debut is an examination of the human psyche after loss and hitting rock bottom.
Weiss is a native of New York City and graduate of NYU with a Bachelor in Music Vocals. The singer, songwriter, musician, and actor has spent most of his time working on off-Broadway productions. His most recent role, Weiss played ‘Bob Dylan’ in Larry Mollin’s folk musical play Search: Paul Clayton, directed by Randal Myler at The Triad NYC. But not all was well with Weiss despite his off-Broadway success. Weiss explains where his life was at recording time:
“Isolated Thunderstorms is an auto-biographical confessional, born out of a life or death need to tell the truth. I threw away the love of my life because I was too sick to care. My mind was warped. I hit rock bottom. What choices did I make to get me to this place of isolation? In order to re-examine the tragic, macabre moments of my life, I first had to embrace them. I don’t know if I understand them, but Isolated Thunderstorms is my response to my examination.”
What we get from Weiss is an autobiographical debut from an artist drawing on life’s darkest moments. There is nothing more authentic than a musician pulling the curtains back and leaving themselves exposed. Isolated Thunderstorms is full a harmonic melodies, theatrical performances, and lyrical compositions in keeping with rock ‘n roll tradition. Weiss starts with the title track and sets the tone for the rest of the album with lyrics like “Sweet storm streaming saves me from myself/I’m happy all alone in my newfound shroud/No longer paralyzed baby you’re so localized/My isolated thunderstorms they keep me from speeding on out.” Weiss channels his inner Dylan with folk ballads “Annalu (From Monterrey)” and “Darlin, Reni.” Weiss is a musical thunderstorm ready to happen.
