Tis the season, lights are going up, folks are shopping, and you cannot go anywhere without hearing Christmas music. Each year we hear the familiar classics, Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and on and on. The list of Christmas albums is endless, as with network specials. Much of the classic songs have been covered over and over again. Each rendition adapted to the artist’s sound. That’s why it’s exciting when we are gifted an original Christmas Album. Thanks to JD Mcpherson we have a new classic, Socks!

Known for his 50’s style rock n’ roll and R&B sound, McPherson and his band deliver a charming and witty Christmas album. This isn’t JD’s first crack at holiday songs, Twinkle (Little Christmas Lights) was released in 2012. Socks is 10 tracks of Christmas bliss, from Ol’ Saint Nick arriving to falling in love each year to getting the worst gift possible–you guessed it–socks! The band delivers on the title song with a bluesy bassline, and showcases McPherson’s songwriting, “it doesn’t beep, or buzz, or bop, or rattle in the box…why’d you waste the paper on a lousy pair of socks!”

If you aren’t sure what to get someone for Christmas, share this album with them instead of an ugly sweater or a lousy pair of socks.

You can listen to the full album on Spotify.
