Recently I had the pleasure of speaking with co-founders of Geykido Comet Records, Heela Naqshband and Shahab Zargari. The couple shared some of their insights and memories as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of GC Records. With 20 years in the books, here is a look back at some of the artist and albums that have been featured on the Las Vegas based label.
It all began in 1999 when GC Records released their first record, a 7” vinyl of Southern California’s Intro5spect. “Education,” the double sided EP featured the title track, a mixture of punk rock and electronic drum beats. While the B side featured a straight-laced rock song “RKN.RLL.”
Peelander-Z has been featured more than once on compilation albums released by GC Records and are one of the fan favorites of everyone at the label. A mixture of punk rock, power rangers, Japanese subculture and all things awesome. GC released the bands first ever vinyl record, a split with Anaheim’s Four Letter Words.
If there’s a band synonymous with a record label, Holding on to Sound is that band. HOTS, as they were known locally, succeeded in taking their sound to a legion of fans across the nation. The progressive punk band will forever be a flagship band for GC Records.
East Arcadia made a quick impact during the time they released a few albums on GC Records. Melodic lyrics that you would expect from a post punk/hardcore band. Their sophomore, politically driven album “We Only See From Where We Stand,” was produced by Matt Allison who also recorded many Lawrence Arms and Alkaline Trio albums.
San Francisco’s Enemy You, released their last 7″ EP “Video to Radio” on GC Records in 2003. The EP features a cover of the theme song from a cartoon of the 80s, “Kidd Video.” With permission from the band GC Records re-released to raise money for the Suicide Prevention Hotline in memory of lead singer David Jones who passed away in 2015.
