Hey there, Gang! It’s been a while. I wish I came bearing good news but unfortunately there has been another outbreak.
A nightmare so daring and bold! Something never before seen in the survival horror genre! A game with such vigorous audacity! That audacity is to even mention the word “new” in its title.
Disclaimer: I do feel bad about shitting on this game in my review below. We are, after all, in a pandemic and a lot of people are not having a good time. I also hate telling anyone what to do with their money. But if you’re feeling nostalgic for the original Resident Evil, just go buy Resident Evil Remastered. It is way better. But if you want to support indie games during a crisis, check out Outbreak The New Nightmare. You might not hate it as much as I did.
Outbreak: The New Nightmare is a game that prides itself on being a hardcore survival horror game. Is the game difficult? Yes, it sure can be. But it has nothing to do with good game design or new ideas that impact the genre. Instead, the real nightmare is trying to navigate a clunky hellscape that feels like the world was is an empty husk, even before the apocalypse.
The character design is laughable and the animation is even more hilarious. If the undead have more life than your human protagonists, you’re gonna have some problems. And trust me, Gang, there are plenty of those. The awkward controls make traversing difficult enough, so when you realize the camera doesn’t even want you to succeed either, it just kinda becomes clear that this game doesn’t care about you.
This game doesn’t feel like it wants you to enjoy it, which is weird considering when you load it up the game is all hype. It thanks you for buying the game and lets you know it is a sequel. It even has a warning for disturbing images. Again, hilarious. But it seems like there is gonna be depth. There are six different characters with different stats and skills. There are five levels and three game modes. But the levels are just thrown together, the puzzles are as hollow as Karen’s thoughts and prayers (sorry Karen), and the combat is about as exciting as golf. At the end of the day, it feels like it wants you to buy this game based on nostalgia alone.
Outbreak will be available for Ps4 on 8/27/2020 for $12.99
