A friend of Rise Up Daily, Miguel Garcia, had an epiphany as to why there are canonical inconsistencies in Star Wars, and it blew our minds! Here it is in his own words:

In my theory, we do not view the events of the Star Wars galaxy directly. Instead we are told about the events of the Star Wars galaxy by the Whills (see From a Certain Point of View and FACPOV The Empire Strikes Back). The thing is, the Whills can’t decide on what actually happened all of the time and frequently argue with each other over what did and didn’t happen. Hence, canonical inconsistencies!

The Whills in the canon book From a Certain Point of View in the last story which establishes that they frequently argue, bicker, and criticize each other a lot. So, after I read that book this idea just came to me, especially after the huge retcon in the Bad Batch premiere regarding Caleb Dume’s Order 66 experience compared to the Kanan comic. I quickly thought to myself “what if the Whills are just arguing with each other over what happened to this character during Order 66 and that’s why we have two completely different and incompatible stories regarding his Order 66 moment?”

TL;DR – Whenever you read a Star Wars book or watch a Star Wars movie/TV show, you are not seeing the events as they ACTUALLY happened in the galaxy. What you are watching/reading/playing is the story the Whill is telling you.

It’s a pretty fun explanation that incorporates some of George Lucas’ earliest ideas for Star Wars regarding the Whills. Let’s not forget the Whills are mentioned in Rogue One so they are definitely Star Wars canon!
