We must come together to achieve justice for our people. In this talk, Alexa, a Digital Organizer for Chispa Nevada identifies environmental justice issues in the community and shares how making a plan, taking action together, and holding elected officials and people of power accountable leads us to win the fight. Alexa was born in Los Angeles, and has roots in Sinaloa, Mexico, and Las Vegas, Nevada. These were key environments where she grew up and learned more about herself, who she wanted to be, and who she wanted to fight for—nuestra gente. Alexa is passionate about music, food, hiking, and Madre Tierra. Her first civic engagement action was in 2016, as a senior year in high school, when she canvassed for the presidential election and has since deepened her involvement by canvassing for Mi Familia Vota. Her work with Chispa Nevada centers on environmental justice where she mobilizes youth to ensure everyone has access to clean air, clean water, clean energy, and the right to live in an equitable and just society where our Latinx community and communities of color can thrive. Earlier this year, Alexa graduated from the 2022 Emerge class, where women and women of color are trained and equipped to run for office and represent our amazing community in Las Vegas. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
