This was an early concept that was actually turned into the studios by artist Adam Relf, but was rejected by Disney and LucasFilm because the poster featured Luke Skywalker.
The official poster was released a few weeks after this poster was rejected. The best part of this entire poster is that we’re looking at a real depiction of Luke Skywalker (outside of the image that surfaced and was immediately taken down and removed from the internet), but some say Luke looks like some of the fan art that was rendered before anyone saw any photos or images Star Wars at all. We do know that Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker is one of the few characters who has not been revealed in any of the previously released footage. Some speculate that he has fallen to the dark side and many think he has disappeared and removed himself just like Master Yoda had done on the Dagobah system.
