Emara features an adorable female superhero who makes it her mission to fight crime on the streets of the UAE, and we were lucky enough to talk to Fatma Almheiri, creator of the show.
RUD: How long has this show been under production?
Fatma Almheiri: Production took about a year and a half.
RUD: How many episodes can we expect?
Almheiri: We’ve made a total of 5 Episodes.
RUD: For world and character designs, what were your inspirations?
Almheiri: For setting and design, my biggest inspiration is my home and where I grew up. Emara’s costume design is inspired by the colors of the UAE flag, while Dhabian’s outfit is inspired by the traditional Emirati dress (turned supersuit). The style, set in place by Art Director Ahmad Beirouthy , is inspired by a lot of retro and iconic anime. (Lots of Trigger and Massaki Yuasa)
RUD: What is the release schedule for the episodes and how many more can we expect?
Almheiri: The Episodes will release every friday inshallah around 7:00pm UAE-Time , so everyone has something to watch for Futoor haha.
RUD: Will all episodes be have an Arabic option as well as an English option?
Almheiri: We’ve dubbed Arabic (both formal and informal) and English versions of the episode but the community has been kind enough to provide our episodes with subtitles for : Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish!
RUD: What do you hope is the future of this show?
Almheiri: Honestly, for people to just enjoy it. The set up is pretty typical “superhero/magical girl” but I think what possibley makes it appealing is where it takes place and the backgrounds of these characters, as well as what they represent. I grew up starving for any arab / muslim representation I could find and it wasn’t until my early twenties that I finally started to see people in cartoons that kinda look like me (but they were usually background characters). Emara is the character I wanted growing up that I didn’t really get so here she is!
RUD: Shukraan!!
Almheiri: Afwan!!
