What do you get when the Irish government funds a movie filmed in the country’s most famous haunted house? An unbelievably beautiful, well-written, supernatural gothic thriller with a few horror undertones and amazing sound design.
The film is not very scary, but it’s certainly creepier than that guy on the bus who smells of shit and won’t stop staring at you. On second thought, I take it back. The film is pretty frightening!
Dread Central Presents had another screening last month and this time they brought UNREST rather than the UNDEAD.
The Lodgers is set during 1920 in rural Ireland and follows anglo-irish twins Rachel and Edward. Orphans cursed to live in their crumbling estate where each night a sinister presence wanders freely. They must abide by three rules: be in bed by midnight’s bell, never let a stranger through your door, Never leave each other all alone. While Rachel feels like a prisoner and dreams of a life away, Edward is a shut-in and feels comfort in the house and its rules. But when their assets begin to dwindle, things begin to get complicated. You’ll have to watch it to see where things go from there!
I rather enjoyed this one. Its dark and eerie tone is immediately apparent. Filmed on location at the famous Loftus Hall with a talented cast, the setting and period is very believable. The cinematography and sound design really shines in this movie and is something to behold. If you like period pieces and ghosts, I think you will dig this one.
The Lodgers was chosen as part of the official selection for the Contemporary World Cinema category at the Toronto International Film Festival.
On a side note. If you would like to attend screenings for more underground horror flicks, be sure to check out Dread Central Presents on Facebook.
