I‘ve played a lot of indie platforming games and they all have something in common. They take a simple gameplay mechanic and try to color it up as a deep and emotional journey. Epic Loon took that idea, barfed all over it and went with hardcore nostalgia porn instead. It’s a cinefile’s fever dream. And it’s beautiful. Epic Loon is a side scrolling couch co-op physics based platformer. The game play is very simple and straight forward, yet challenging and addicting.

You and up to three other players play as minute aliens locked away in what was thought to be obsolete technology, a VHS cleaner tape. That is until our antagonist “Joe” started having problems with his VHS player. Since Joe is a huge analog nerd that can’t just buy the damn blu-ray, he decides to visit a shady shopkeeper who sells him the cleaner tape with a few Gremlins-esque warnings. When he puts it in “you” awaken from your slumber and escape your prison. Once Joe realizes what’s going on he tries to kill you with his favorite creature features. The goal is to ruin timeless classics. It’s up to you to survive and destroy what he loves most. Basically you’re an alien that mutates into a blob that sticks to walls and can launch itself off of them to travel from point a to point b within each film.

As each movie progresses so does the difficulty due to smart level design and the use of physics. Joe will also use his remote to try and throw you off guard by rewinding or fast forwarding. There are multiple dangers that, if touched, will kill you. Additionally you can choose to disrupt or help your alien kin.

There are a few different game modes for the more hardcore player including a “battle” mode where you and your friends can compete with each other and if done right, crush each other’s spirits.

The four movies to navigate through are NOSFERACULA, JURASSIK LAND, GROJIRA and /\|IEN : THE HITCHHICKER. Obvious spoofs of cult classics, all of which have three acts and look absolutely wonderful thanks to their comical yet gruesome art style that was drawn in 2D and animated on a 3D engine.

So, we’ve got a fun game that looks good and feels good but….. how does it sound? Well, I found out about this game because of sound and it’s one word: Pryaprisme. I’m not talking about boners hanging around long after the job folks, I’m talking about the band from France.

This game has one of the most bad ass original soundtracks I’ve ever heard. It’s like Oingo Boingo and Mr. Bungle fought to the death at a Tron-themed garage sale. It’s amazing.

It’s a full package, folks. Fun game play, plenty of content, great visuals and a stellar soundtrack. If you like indie games, old school movvies and want a game you can play with friends on your couch I suggest giving Epic Loon a try.

Epic Loon will be released this summer on Steam, Xbox one and Nintendo Switch.
