There are some things in this world you don’t know why or how they come into existence. Pig Eat Ball is one of those things. Who thinks of something this absurd? And more importantly, how in the sam heck did they make it work?
Did we need a Pacman-inspired barf fest? Probably not. But why not? Why do I keep asking questions? Will this whole review be masked under the guise of mysterious punctuation? Have I taken this too far? Probably?
Pig Eat Ball is an arcade-inspired adventure that is so profoundly simple that it’s kind of incredible how well it works. The story in brief, is that you’re a pig princess that’s getting married to whoever wins some asinine competition. She decides to whip up a disguise and compete herself to avoid getting the old “ball and chain”.
The competition involves collecting tennis balls with your mouth. The catch is that you get bigger the more balls you consume, so you’ll find yourself having to puke then out to get through certain areas… I’m not joking! I’d say you can’t make this shit up but, clearly someone did.
If I were to compare it to other games I’d say “Just take every top-down arcade action game you can think of, throw some Burger King/McDonald’s style cartoon imagery in the mix with a dash of bulimia, and blam! You got yourself Pig Eat Ball.”
The game, while not a style of game I prefer normally, is quit amazing. From user experience to gameplay, this game was very well put together. The areas where you travel to each level is filled with mazes and puzzles that will unlock other disguises that each come with different capabilities and powerups. And as far as levels go, there is loads of them. Loads and loads. Each of which are quite challenging and as you progress, only get harder and more varied with enemy types, game types and boss battles.
I’m all for a challenge but when a game this simple makes me feel that dumb, how can I justify booting it back up? I’ll just stick to something easier and play Dark Souls. Yeah, I went there.
But don’t let my downfall stop you. If you’re into challenging arcade games, this one just might be the wet dream you never knew you needed. Now go buy this game and change your sheets you filthy animal.
Pig Eat Ball is available for $14.99 on Xbox One, PS4, PC and now on Nintendo switch.
